Introduction

Editorial

We are delighted to welcome you to the Flex Logistics eNewsletter for May 2007. In this Limerick edition we will be outlining the process improvements which have been undertaken and rolled out to the ultimate benefit of all our customers. These include our inbound freight management process and Value Add Requestor software.

These applications are designed to ensure ease of movement of inventory through the facility and to provide all our customers complete transparency with regard to the status of the inventory. Our supplier metrics pack is updated on a weekly basis and allows customers to view on line how we have performed in managing their inventory. We are also delighted to be expanding our operation to Poland where we have been successful in obtaining the business whereby we will continue to be the preferred Service Logistics Centre for Dell Computers as they expand their line of business into Eastern Europe.

We hope you find this month’s edition interesting and look forward to seeing your comments.

Feedback on the newsletter can be sent to newsletter@ie.flextronics.com. We also invite you to visit our website www.flextronics-logistics.com which is updated regularly.

Inbound Freight Management - Application of 6 Sigma and Lean methodologies to IFM
top

Our customer is a leading electronics manufacturer whose EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) operation is based in the mid-west of Ireland. Our hub (the largest SMI Hub in Europe) manages all inbound raw materials (29k pallet locations; 1200 Kanban locations, 20,000 Part Numbers: 24/7 operation).

In order to support this business requirement, Flextronics Logistics had to re-engineer its inbound batch receipt processes to allow for the seamless one piece flow of material from receipt to put-away, increase visibility into the supply chain for our customer and Flex Logistics and the automation of receiving metrics reporting and capture.

Utilising 6 Sigma and Lean methodologies, to improve cycle time and reduce/eliminate waste, the Receiving Re-Engineering team developed a process known as Inbound Freight Management. The solution resulted in significant improvement in time to receive, quality and inventory integrity performance.

Supplier Metrics Pack - Web Portal for KPI reporting

The FLEXLogistics hub in Raheen, Limerick is the largest in Ireland. All product is bar code labelled at a case level and all transactions are paperless. All the product is vendor owned and held under VMI rules. FLEXLogistics required a solution that would provide our customers with up to date information and metrics to support their business and mission critical decision making.

The solution resulted in all product being bar code labelled at a case level and all transactions becoming paperless. Receipts, movements and issues are captured via radio frequency scanners. These transactions are messaged electronically back to the vendors planning or ERP systems. This results in millions of transaction messages being messaged in real time or nightly.

flexRequestor - Integrating critical cross boundary workflows
top

In recent times, there has been much focus on Lean material flow processes in Logistics but equally critical to sustained competitive advantage is the integration and responsiveness of the supporting work flow based processes. Our experience is that companies that foster and improve the capabilities of their entire supply chains win in the market place. This demands continued focus on cross boundary information sharing, agile decision making and follow through on business and mission critical decision making.

FLEXLogistics as the Service Logistics link in the successful Dell Computer supply chain has developed a suite of workflow applications that support these emerging critical cross boundary workflows. The flexRequestor application is a web based tool that integrates critical cross boundary workflows. The result is a web based, centralised solution with global visibility at all times.
