Six Sigma

Six Sigma

Six sigma is a statistical measure of the performance of a process/product.

  • "Sigma" or (s) is a Greek letter used to describe variability & is an indicator of how likely errors is to occur.
  • A higher sigma indicates a higher ability to meet process requirements.
  • A 6s refers to a statistically derived performance target of operating with only 3.4 defects for every million "opportunities".

6s applies facts and data to eliminate or control unwanted process variation. It employs a five-step process known as DMAIC. DMAIC (pronounced dee-may-ik), stands for:

D - DEFINE
M - MEASURE
A - ANALYZE
I - IMPROVE
C - CONTROL

Six Sigma in Flextronics Global Services

Six Sigma is not just a methodology for reducing variation within manufacturing processes or improving quality of products. It is also a methodology that is increasingly being applied with great success within transactional areas such as purchasing, service and financial and supply chain functions

It is a way of approaching all processes in a methodical manner to prevent wasted materials, time and effort. Successful Six Sigma deployment has been shown to occur in those companies that wholeheartedly adopt the strategy and drive it within all functions to become part of the company's culture.

The power of Six Sigma is multiplied when it is allied with DFT or Lean deployment.

In Flextronics, the Six Sigma breakthrough methodology is used for:

  • Increasing Customer Satisfaction
    • To assist each business unit to achieve the highest opportunities in Customer Satisfaction and KOIs such as ROIC, ITO, DSO, CM, etc.
    • For example, by analyzing which of the Key Operating Indicators shows an intractable negative gap between goals and actual performance, sites or business units can enlist the Six Sigma skills and tools to help identifying underperformance causes and driving significant improvement that add value to the bottom line.
    • Processes that show resistance to improvement, or intransigent customer and supplier problems affecting business performance can also benefit from this focused methodology.
  • Aligning to the Business Strategy and Key Operating Indicators (KOIs)
  • Developing Flex Factory BP Initiatives
    • To guide and support the development and implementation of Best Practices (BP) within the Flex Factory objectives.
    • Each Best Practice team follows the Six Sigma 'DMAIC' approach as guided through the Flex Tracker to start, monitor and complete its initiatives.
